Happy anniversary Nigeria! 53 years is not 53 days or even 53 weeks, we've truly come a long way. Nigeria is my country, Nigeria is my land; I'm truly proud of the unique green white green, and I'm not ashamed to flaunt it wherever I go. But let's analyze our journey so far, are we really proud to be 53? Considering the current state of our nation?
Let's compare our mother land with a 53 year old woman. A woman at 53 should be; married; done with at least first degree university education; done with child birth considering menopause; and should be approaching retirement. I can see a picture of a full blown woman; well rounded and fruitful. Can we say this about our darling motherland? Are we really independent as a nation? Have we finished feeding ourselves talkless of feeding children--other smaller nations that are in need--talking about education... ASUU! How many times have we had strike in the past 53 years? Who is talking about retirement when our youths don't even have jobs? And the ones already in school will graduate to join the already long queue of job seekers. Not to talk of the multitude that are trying JAMB annually to get into school. I mean, you can just answer the question by yourself.
But who do we blame for the Nigerian problem? Politicians! Is the very popular name you hear. Some people even say it's the religous leaders, and others claim it's the devil (lol). I think we should do something different this year, Let's all blame ourselves; Yes! I blame me, Do you blame you?
Don't you think investing good words into Nigeria and praying for our leaders is more beneficial to this nation than spending an hour castigating the president and talking about how a particular minister just bought a new jeep or private jet. See, the thing is, there's no doubt we have corruption as one of our major problems, and most leaders we've had have a large part of the blame for most of our troubles, but I think if we all decide today to do something different, Nigeria will receive a huge boost.
How can you dump garbage in the drainage and go ahead to complain that the commissioner or minister of environment isn't working? How can you not pay taxes and bills and expect to receive services? The greatness of Nigeria begins with you, and even though it's not wrong to constructively criticize our governments once in a while to create checks and produce accountability, also remember that the remaining four fingers are pointing back at you. Yeap! It's high time we stop pointing and start changing ourselves individually to help Nigeria.
Come to think of it, who is saying we don't have something to be grateful to God for? 53 years together as a nation is worth celebrating you know? Despite the rough times we've experienced; the ups and downs; tribal differences; and over seven hundred local governments; We are still one strong nation with over 160 million beautiful citizens. Isn't that something to be grateful for? As you celebrate this year's anniversary, make sure you say a prayer for our darling motherland. We'd get there; God bless Nigeria.
