CANCER: The Strange Disease

World Cancer day was on Tuesday and it's an international observance marked around the world. On the midday dialogue we had the chairman of the Nigerian Medical association as our guest for an hour, and he helped to clear up a lot of things about cancer as well as educating them on prevention techniques. But something came to mind while we were having the show, people really have wrong views about cancer, and you know that is really adding to the stigma and fear many people have about it.

That is why 'Debunk the myths' is really cool as the theme for this year's observance of World Cancer Day. Speaking out is a great way to fight cancer. But another thought, "can we really fight cancer?" especially considering the fact that science keeps reminding us that we have very limited clue on how to tackle this 'bad boy' disease. The World Health Organization released an 800-page report yesterday telling the world that we've got 14 million cancer cases annually and that figure could rise to 25 million in two decades if nothing is done. So what then can we do you ask?

We can say do all the preventive stuffs; no alcohol, no alcohol, no cigarette, eat more friuts and vegetables, etc. But I read about a vegetarian who doesn't take alcohol or tobacco yet had cancer--yeah, how heart breaking can that be? (Haha)--that doesn't mean you shouldn't take the much safer route of living a healthy lifestyle. I think we also need the medical people to step up research! Sleep in your labs, read, try, fail, mix those chemicals, find us a cure! We'd pay you. I'm sure Bradd Pitt would have paid anything to prevent Angelina's double Mastectomy, but with cancer we are reminded over and over again that money cannot buy life. Live everyday like your last, make an impact. Love your neighbour as yourself.
